Sharing Visions

The Heartwork of Kyoto Journal

For nearly 40 years, Kyoto Journal has explored, celebrated, and shared the creative life of Japan and the rest of Asia from our home in Kyoto, which we view not merely as a physical location, but as a formative mind space. Thanks to our worldwide, all-volunteer network of contributors sharing our open and humanistic approach, our magazine is local, independent, and outside the sphere of commercial media. Under the direction of photographer and Founding Editor John Einarsen, the quality of Kyoto Journal’s photography and layouts has been celebrated, while its writing, under the direction of Managing Editor Ken Rodgers, has long set a high standard for editorial excellence.

For this exhibition we have selected some of the most compelling images—and the stories behind them—from Kyoto Journal’s 108 issues. Making sure these stories are told has been our “heartwork.”
