For nearly 40 years, Kyoto Journal has explored, celebrated, and shared the creative life of Japan and the rest of Asia from our home in Kyoto, which we view not merely as a physical location, but as a formative mind space. Thanks to our worldwide, all-volunteer network of contributors sharing our open and humanistic approach, our magazine is local, independent, and outside the sphere of commercial media. Under the direction of photographer and Founding Editor John Einarsen, the quality of Kyoto Journal’s photography and layouts has been celebrated, while its writing, under the direction of Managing Editor Ken Rodgers, has long set a high standard for editorial excellence.

For this exhibition we have selected some of the most compelling images— and the stories behind them—from Kyoto Journal’s 108 issues. Making sure these stories are told has been our “heartwork.”

Kyoto Journal 109 - Sharing Visions

The next issue of Kyoto Journal, “Sharing Visions” (KJ 109), will celebrate people with unique visions for the future.

The theme ‘Sharing Visions’ is related to Kyoto Journal’s exhibition in this year’s Kyotographie, Kyoto’s premier international photography festival. The show celebrates KJ’s history of sharing extraordinary photographic images since our founding in 1987. Issue 109, in turn, looks toward the future; in this city of traditional cultures, how can we preserve the best of the past while moving forward in a world of continuous innovation?
