We want to be regarded as ‘open’ homeless
For eight years the married couple lived in a shelter made of cardboard, wood, and plastic sheeting under the Kojinguchi Bridge, where they made it a point to communicate freely with other homeless people, “ordinary citizens,” and even the apparitions inhabiting the riverbank. They dreamed of moving to Hokkaido, Okinawa, or Yakushima after selling what remained of their belongings. However, most of it had been repossessed by a Tokyo finance bureau after the failure of their business.
