The late Nishikawa Senrei, a practitioner of Japanese classical dance of the Nishikawa School, in her performances, her creative work, and her dance classes for both Japanese and international students, demonstrated an eclectic sensibility that embraced both Japanese and European art and myth. Observing how in Poland, cities destroyed by the Nazis were recreated in perfect detail, she stated, “you have to tear down the old completely sometimes to build the new in the spirit of the old.”
